Troubleshooting a Dishwasher

shutterstock_140821096Dishwashers are popular appliances that are found in most homes today. They are extremely useful and make life much easier by saving you valuable time. When buying a dishwasher, you want to look for one that is reliable, easy to maintain and gets its job done efficiently. Realistically, the dishwasher you buy will encounter a few problems. When this happens, you’ll want to fix them as quickly as possible. To help you, Platinum Services, an appliance repair specialist in Chicago, recommends the following tips to solve a few easily-remedied dishwasher problems that you may encounter.

  1. Dishwasher does not clean dishes properly:

Are your dishes still dirty after a cycle in the dishwasher?  This problem is caused by a variety of things, such as not using enough detergent, blockage in the spray arm holes or by selecting a program that is too gentle. To remedy the problem, depending on its cause, you must simply use the correct amount of detergent, unblock the spray arm holes or select a different program and your dishes will continue to sparkle.

  1. My dishwasher is leaking

Many things can be the cause of a leak in your dishwasher. First of all, check to see if your door is sealing properly. To do this, close the door on a dollar bill and see if the gasket adheres properly. If everything seems fine, check the hinges. Bent hinges will cause the door to not close adequately. If that’s the case, you will have to replace them.

  1. Dishwasher is unstable:

Is your dishwasher door gap uneven, is it tilting forward for some reason or it is continuously rocking instead of remaining stable? The cause of these problems may be that the dishwasher is not level on the floor or that it has not been properly installed. To correct this, you must simply adjust the leveling legs of the dishwasher as per the installation instructions in your User Manual.

  1. Dishwasher will not start:

If your dishwasher will not start, first make sure that it is plugged in properly. If the problem persists, it is most likely due to a dry cycle interruption in its previous use. To solve this problem, simply press the PROGRAM button for 3 seconds to cancel and then restart the cycle. If this does not solve the problem, assistance from an appliance repair technician may be required.

  1. Dishwasher doesn’t drain

First, try to see if your drain pump is defective by testing the pump motor with an Ohm meter. A defective drain pump will have to be replaced. If your drain pump is fine, check the drain impeller, which is attached to the pump and pushes the water out. Again, a worn out impeller will have to be replaced. Finally, check the drain valve to make sure it isn’t blocked with debris.

There are many more problems that can occur with your dishwasher appliance; however, these problems are easily solved.
